COPENHAGEN

If you think you know Copenhagen, think again - the city's museum models offer a whole new perspective on this stunning capital.

From medieval castles to modern landmarks, Copenhagen's museum models bring the city's rich history and culture to life in stunning detail.

Copenhagen, the capital and largest city of Denmark, is located on the islands of Sjælland and Amager. With a population exceeding 1 million, it stands as a prominent urban center in the country, accompanied by other notable cities like Aarhus and Esbjerg.

Copenhagen's origins trace back to the 11th century, with its first recorded mention from that same period. Initially a port settlement, it didn't attain the status of capital until the 15th century. Under the reign of Kristian IV in the 17th century, Copenhagen emerged as a significant Danish hub.

In 2000, the Øresund Bridge was constructed, linking Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden, enhancing connectivity between the two cities.

The city's vibrant core is the Rådhuspladsen (Town Hall Square), featuring landmarks such as Kongens Nytorv (King's New Square). Noteworthy buildings in this area include the Thott Palace, now housing the French Embassy, and the Charlottenburg Palace, currently the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the Royal Theatre.

Today, Copenhagen is a key regional center for business, culture, and science, and hosts Scandinavia's largest airport. Among its many tourist attractions are the iconic bronze statue of the Little Mermaid and the historic harbour fortress Kastellet.

The models on this page were sent to us from the Museum of Copenhagen.

Museum of Copenhagen display two models of the whole city.

First model is depicting Copenhagen's City Hall Square and the second one shows present day. The second one is also tactile. This means that the visitors can touch the houses and structures. The Museum is also using this element for their blind and vision impaired users. An interesting thing in this exhibition is a display with model and one button. The button is switching the display of the city model between the years 1550, 1650 and 1855. All the exhibited models are very popular among the visitors of the exhibition.
