COVENTRY

Step into the museum model of Coventry, and be transported back in time to the 16th century, where you can experience the city's rich history and culture firsthand.

Explore the intricately detailed museum model of Coventry, and be amazed as the bustling streets of the city in the 16th century come to life before your eyes.

Coventry likely dates back to Saxon times. In 1016, the Danes sacked the Saxon nunnery of St. Osburga, prompting Earl Leofric of Mercia and his wife, Godiva, to establish a monastery.

In the 18th century, silk ribbon weaving emerged as the primary industry in Coventry, followed by the introduction of watchmaking. However, the silk ribbon trade collapsed in 1860, causing many weavers to leave the town.

We tried to approach museums in the Great Britain but not a lot of museums had a scale model of their city. After some time we have found an article in Coventry local news about a person who made an historical scale model of his city and we decided to contact him. We couldn't find an e-mail contact of the person so we tried our luck on Facebook. On Facebook we found a creator and a new owner of the model.

Scott Duffin provided information and photos of a Coventry scale model which was made by Peter Garbett, a fireman from the city. The model is 3.35 x 3.35 meters and depicts the Coventry in 1509. There are 280 individual buildings, 12 city gates and 20 towers. Model was displayed at the Coventry Central Library and Coventry Council Head Office. Mr. Garbett says that 1509 was the best year to made a model, because Henry VIII had just come to the throne and Coventry had built all its walls.
