Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of Košice as you explore the meticulously crafted museum model showcasing the town in the 18th century.

Journey back in time and witness the charm of 1700s Košice through the captivating museum model, offering a glimpse into the town's fascinating past.

Košice originated in the 9th century and was officially chartered in 1241. During the late Middle Ages, it became one of the 24 trading settlements on the Polish-Slovak frontier, prominently featuring immigrant German merchants. In 1660, Benedict Kischdy, the Hungarian bishop of Eger, founded a university in Košice, which was later suppressed by the Austrians. The city retains remnants of its robust 17th-century fortifications built against Turkish invasions, notably the well-preserved Hangman's Bastion, now a museum, and the Mikluš Prison. The medieval street Hlavná Ulica remains the city's central thoroughfare, featuring landmarks such as the Gothic Cathedral of St. Elizabeth, St. Michael's Chapel, Levoča House (the former warehouse of trading-settlement merchants), and several other churches and palaces.

Košice experienced rapid development after becoming part of Czechoslovakia in 1920. It was occupied by the Hungarians in 1938 and, after its liberation in 1945, served as the first seat of the postwar Czechoslovakian government and the Slovak National Council. In the decades following World War II, Šafařík University and several scientific and research institutes were established in the city.

Situated between the mineral-rich Slovak Ore Mountains to the west and a fertile agricultural plain to the east, Košice is a hub for both heavy industry and agricultural markets.

Košice City Museum displays a wooden scale model of Košice which depicts the appearance of the city in the 18th century, with a fortification system and a moat, which in the following periods (from the 19th century) began to be removed along with the growth of the city and the city architecturally naturally changed its face.

The model itself was builded in the 70s of the 20th century and is a part of the permanent exhibition of the Košice's centuries exhibition, which tooks place in Mikluš Prison. Exhibition is fairly popular among the museum visitors.
