What is a virtual 3D model?

The main project is dedicated to non-virtual self-made models of cities. This side project aims to show visitors to the site also virtual models, which are freely available for viewing on the internet.

Virtual models are an interactive complement to hand-crafted models. Their main feature is that the visitor to the model can walk around selected cities in the historical period. The cities in the interactive models are based on period postcards, vignettes or various descriptions. In the creation of some virtual models, the profile of a historical building is taken from a 3D scan of a real building, if it is still standing and has not been damaged over the years.

The ability to take a 3D walk through a historic city is a truly unique and valuable experience. Visitors to such a website can explore their familiar surroundings in the past, providing a sense of what life was like in previous eras. This can be especially interesting for those who have a personal connection to the city, whether they grew up there or simply have a deep interest in its history.

One of the key benefits of a 3D model is that it can help visitors orient themselves in the past. By labeling important buildings and landmarks, visitors can better understand the layout of the city and how it has changed over time. For example, if someone is interested in a particular building that no longer exists, the 3D model can help them visualize where it used to be and how it fit into the larger urban landscape.

In addition to helping visitors explore the past, a 3D model can also be a valuable tool for researchers and archaeologists. If the model is based on actual vedutas, paintings, or notes, it can provide a more accurate representation of the city in the past. This can be especially helpful in locating important historical sites or artifacts, as the model can provide a better idea of where these things might be located.

Overall, a 3D model of a historic city can be an incredibly valuable resource for anyone interested in history, architecture, or urban planning. By providing a more immersive and detailed look at the past, it allows us to better understand and appreciate the cities and communities that have shaped our world.
